Easter
According to
Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion.
In Poland it’s a very important holiday with many interesting traditions. It starts with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter Monday.
Palm Sunday is the
sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week.
Easter Palm is a traditional symbol of
Palm Sunday. In memory of Jesus arriving to Jerusalem at the Church we bless
Easter Palms. This traditional is know in Poland since the Middle Ages.
Easter basket
The Easter
basket is filled with
bread, eggs, salt, pepper, sausage and Easter lamb and chick. On Holy
Saturday we go to the church with Easter basket and in the church the priest
blesses the basket. On Easter for breakfast we eat food laying on plates on table.
One of the Polish symbols and traditions of Easter are Easter Eggs – beautiful, hand-decorated eggs with different designes and techniques depending on the region of Poland. Pisanka is the general, common name for decorated eggs using different techniques.
On Sunday we usually first go to
the church for a Ressurection mass held at 6 o’clock in the morning and then we eat an Easter breakfast. It’s a big
ceremony. At the begining we share the blessed egg with the whole family. For
breakfast we eat food blessed on Saturday. It’s traditionally eggs, sausages, bread
and ham.
Watering Monday or Śmigus
Dyngus is an old custom. The girl who was watered the most was the most attractive. So girls wanted to be wet. Now it is for fun.
